Wyoming Partners with Catalis to Combat Unemployment Insurance Fraud
Wyoming’s Department of Workforce Services has partnered with Catalis to implement a modular fraud prevention solution targeting fictitious employer schemes in the state’s unemployment insurance program, aiming to enhance program integrity, optimize resources, and protect taxpayer dollars amid widespread UI overpayment issues nationwide.
Catalis and the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services (WDWS) have partnered to implement a solution aimed at identifying and preventing fictitious employer fraud in Wyoming’s unemployment insurance (UI) program. Catalis is recognized as a leading national provider of fraud prevention solutions for state UI programs.
Pedro Rosa, VP Strategic Relations at Catalis UI Solutions, stated that fictitious employer schemes are a growing threat designed to fraudulently collect UI benefits. This initiative demonstrates WDWS’s commitment to safeguarding program integrity, optimizing department resources, and protecting taxpayer dollars.
Kris Funk, UI Administrator for WDWS, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting the addition of a modular solution for UI fraud prevention and the commitment to innovation and efficiency.
Overpayments and fraud have been significant issues for many state unemployment systems in recent years. According to the United States Department of Labor, nearly three dozen states experienced unemployment insurance overpayments totaling hundreds of millions of dollars during the three years following the pandemic, with some states' overpayments reaching into the billions.
In 2023, the Labor Department launched an initiative to promote the development of modular solutions for state UI systems nationwide. Catalis provides a suite of modular UI fraud detection and prevention solutions that can integrate with a state’s existing UI system. This modular approach enables states to modernize specific areas of their UI infrastructure rapidly, preventing fraud, waste, and abuse, while avoiding the need for complex, multi-year, multi-million-dollar system-wide overhauls.
